Build Something That Matters When Nobody Is Watching on Social Media

We believe you should consider this, especially if you are someone who still navigates the shadows but remembers what the light looks like.

Social media can be useful. It can help you grow a business, build a community, stay connected, share ideas, and when utilized seriously, even contribute to real nation-building. However, it is equally effective at spreading lies, tearing people down, and promoting the loudest or sometimes the ugliest opinions in the room.

This should not surprise us. People have always been drawn to provocative lies more easily than to quiet truths. A lie can be entertaining, while the truth often requires patience, context, and the willingness to confront uncomfortable facts.

If you are genuinely trying to build something meaningful, don’t let this reality discourage you. This part of the internet isn’t going away. Those who possess valuable knowledge may sometimes be dismissed as “elitist,” “out of touch,” “fearmongers,” or simply “crazy.” Expertise can be unpopular, and nuance rarely goes viral. Being right does not always earn you applause.

Keep going anyway. Remember that online fame is fleeting, temporary, and easily forgotten. You can be everywhere today and nearly invisible three months from now. The algorithms do not love you or know you; they simply measure attention and redistribute it.

Therefore, don’t build your life around seeking visibility. Build something that matters when nobody is watching. Cultivate relationships that exist beyond followers and likes. Engage in work that lasts beyond the news cycle. Have conversations in real spaces, with real people, about issues that have consequences beyond the screen.

Because eventually, the phone will be put down. And when it lies face down, what remains is the work you’ve done, the people you’ve touched, the changes you’ve made, and the life you’ve truly built.
